In 2022, Kryvyi Rih eco-activists from DTKR analyzed 14 notifications about the start of environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedures, 6 EIA reports and one package of supporting documents for obtaining an emission permit.
They provided their comments, in particular, regarding the capacities of ArcelorMital Kryvyi Rih (AMKR), Southern GOK and analyzed the package of documents for obtaining a permit for emissions from the tailings repository of AMKR "III map", reports the public organization "Enough to poison Kryvyi Rih".
ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih received permission from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources for the construction of its fourth tailings storage facility "III map". Emissions of polluting substances into the atmosphere from the production activities of this tailings facility will reach about 262.5 tons, excluding emissions from mobile sources.
"The already difficult work of studying hundreds of pages of technical documentation in the procedures of the Internal Affairs and Communications Department this year was complicated by the restriction of access to the documents," said eco-activists.
They emphasized that despite the procedure for public access to EIA materials developed in the second half of 2022, it was almost impossible to get them from the Department of Ecology of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional State Administration.
"All our requests were met with refusals, as well as threats to send information about our requests to the SSU," the authors noted, adding that the Ministry of Environment described how the public can obtain the necessary documents.
Eco-activists emphasized that despite all the difficulties, they continued their work and were able to obtain the necessary documents from enterprises and local self-government bodies.
"DTKR does not stop working to protect the environment and environmental rights. In addition, we will fight for access to environmental information, which is enshrined in the current legislation," they emphasized.
Earlier, EcoPoitic wrote, that DTRK eco-activists proposed to oblige enterprises to use the best available technologies and management methods (BREFs). This will help reduction of industrial load on the environment and people, as well as eco-modernization, in particular, the largest polluting company ArcelorMittal.
As EcoPolitic previously reported, in 2021 the head of the State Environmental Inspection Andriy Malyovany stated that the company ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih will answer in court for violating environmental protection legislation due to the construction of a tailings storage facility without carrying out an environmental impact assessment.
