In Kyiv, in the Holosiivsky Park named after M. Rylskyi, communal workers installed 13 houses for bats (bat box) in order to preserve the population of these animals.
In the near future, they plan to install 50 such houses in the city, reports Kyivzelenbud on Facebook.
Bats are the only flying mammals, most of which are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine.
5 species of bats live in Holosiivskyi Park. The territory of the park is used by bats as feeding stations, watering places and daily migration routes. Since the territory of the park is a place of stationary recreation, i.e. permanent stay of people here, there are significant noise irritants. To improve the living conditions of bats, experts recommended the construction of special houses for bats.
Houses are attached to trees at a height of about 3 m so that predators do not reach them. Special wire and bars are used to fasten the bat boxes, which do not damage the bark of trees.
Such bat boxes have also already appeared in Partizanska Slava Park, Nyvka Park, and in the territories of Kyiv forestry farms. All of them are made by the masters of the districts.
"Establishing houses for bats, as well as houses for ducks, squirrels, arranging Moorish lawns – all this is designed to support biodiversity in the capital. In this way, we help animals, birds and insects live comfortably in the metropolis. At the same time, we support the productivity of the ecosystems of our city, because each species has its own niche and role in nature," said Oleksiy Korol, CEO of Kyivzelenbud.
Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in Kyiv, scientisis conducted research on assessments of neighborhoods districts according to ecological indicators.
As EcoPolitic previously reported, in Kyiv, in the Darnytsky district, Lake Korovyache is planned to be declared as a landscape reserve of local importance, the area of which will reach 1 hectare.
