Investing in hydrogen technology is a key component of President Biden's plan to decarbonise the industrial sector

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has announced plans to fund regional clean hydrogen centers (H2Hubs) for $ 8 billion nationwide.

H2Hubs will create networks of hydrogen producers, consumers and local connecting infrastructure to accelerate the use of hydrogen as a clean energy source, reports DOE

The paper noted that the production, processing, delivery, storage and end-use of pure hydrogen, including innovative use in the industrial sector, is crucial to achieving President Biden's goal of 100% clean electricity by 2035 and zero carbon emissions by 2050.

"Hydrogen energy is able to reduce emissions from many carbon sectors and open up a world of economic opportunities to clean up energy companies and workers across the country," said US Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm.

Investment in hydrogen technology is a key component of President Biden's plan to decarbonise the industrial sector, which accounts for a third of domestic carbon emissions.

Hydrogen energy has the potential to decarbonise many sectors, including heavy transport and steel production, as well as creating high-paying jobs and paving the way for a clean energy network.

Today, the United States produces about 10 million metric tons of hydrogen per year, and the world produces about 90 million tons.

"Although most of the hydrogen comes from natural gas through steam reforming of methane, electrolysis technology, which uses electricity to produce hydrogen from water, is a new way with dozens of plants across the country," the statement said.

This technology can produce hydrogen using clean electricity from solar, wind and nuclear energy.

The selection of regional H2Hubs will take into account factors such as environmental equity, community involvement, consent placement, equity and workforce development.

The H2Hubs project will support the current ini ciativu DOE, to bring together stakeholders to help reduce the cost of advanced production, transportation, storage and use of hydrogen in several sectors of the economy.
