The most polluted district of the city was the Dniprovsky

Cherkasy air is polluted with dust and chemical compounds such as formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide and ammonia.

The level of pollution in the city was analyzed by specialists of the laboratory of the regional center for hydrometeorology, who took 1,712 air samples in May.

"Generalized results of the analysis of air samples showed that the level of air pollution in Cherkasy has increased again. The main air pollutants are formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide and ammonia. In dry windy weather, dust joins them," said Vitaliy Postryha, head of the regional meteorological center.

Systematic observations of the content of harmful substances in the air were carried out at three stationary stations (PSZ) with a sampling frequency — four times a day (01:00, 07:00, 13:00, 19:00), six days a week.

It is noted that 17 harmful impurities were controlled in the city air, namely:

  • the main most common substances: dust, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide;
  • specific inorganic substances: ammonia, nitric oxide, hydrogen sulfide, sulfates;
  • heavy metals: cadmium, iron, manganese, copper, nickel, lead, chromium, zinc;
  • organic compounds: formaldehyde.

In general, the most polluted district of the city was the Dniprovsky.

The average monthly maximum permissible concentrations of harmful impurities in the air of Cherkasy were:

  • according to the dust content of 1.3 MPC at all posts,
  • on the content of sulfur dioxide from 0.34 to 0.36 MPC,
  • on the content of nitrogen dioxide from 0.5 to 0.75 MPC; the most polluted area —  Dniprovsky,
  • on the content of carbon monoxide 0.33 MPC at all posts,
  • according to the content of nitric oxide 0.33 MPC on PSZ № 4,
  • ammonia content from 0.5 to 1.25 MPC; the highest concentrations were also recorded in the Dniprovsky district,
  • according to the formaldehyde content of 2.0 MPC on PSZ № 3.

"During the last 10 days of May, under the influence of cyclones, the atmosphere became more dynamic with frequent rains, which helped to clean it from pollutants," said the Cherkasy meteorological center.

On the eve EcoPolitics reported that in the area of Cherkasy Kryvalivka representatives of four public organizations removed one of the local beaches from a pile of garbage.
