In the air of Kyiv during the week with September 26 to October 1, 2022, an excess of the average daily maximum permissible concentrations of nitrogen dioxide by 5 times and formaldehyde by 3.3 times was found.

Compared to the previous week, the content of pollutants in the air increased, informs the weekly report on air pollution from the Borys Sreznevsky Central Geophysical Observatory.

According to the data of the observatory, the exceeding of the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) in terms of the average daily content of nitrogen dioxide was:

  • 4.0-5.0 times – October 1 on Victory Square and Kaunaska Street;
  • 1.4-2.8 times – on Demiivska and Bessarabska squares, Obolonsky prospect; Lesya Ukrainka boulevards, in the Hydropark area, Kaunaska, Akademika Strazheska, Dovzhenka, Popudrenka and Inzhener Borodin streets;
  • no excesses were observed at 37 Nauky Ave. (in the area of the meteorological station).

Exceeding the MPC by average daily formaldehyde content:

  • 1.8-3.3 times – on Demiivska, Bessarabska and Peremoha squares, Peremoha, Nauka and Obolonski avenues, Lesya Ukrainka boulevard, in the Hydropark area, Akademika Strazheska, Dovzhenka, Kaunaska and Popudrenka streets.

Exceeding the MPC by average daily content carbon monoxide :

  • 1.7 times – September 30 on Akademika Stražeska Street (intersection with Vaclav Havel Boulevard);
  • 1.0-1.3 times on Bessarabska and Demiivska squares, Peremogy Avenue.

Other exceedances of MPC by average daily content:

  • suspended solids – 1.1 times on Bessarabska Square, Peremogy Avenue (Sviatoshyn metro area), Kaunaska Street.

Specialists of the observatory selected and analyzed 1572 samples of atmospheric air from 15 stationary posts.

The report noted that, according to the forecast of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, the nature of the weather will change to anticyclonic within two to three days, which will not contribute to the dispersion of harmful impurities in the atmosphere.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the experts of the UN Environment Program have prepared examples of five cities that are actively fight the problem of air pollution.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, Oleksandr Starukh, head of the Zaporizhia Regional State Administration, noted that emissions into the atmosphere cause great indignation among residents, therefore, it is necessary to speed up the resolution of this problem.
