Ukraine has fulfilled 80% of its European integration commitments in the area of the environment and made 3% progress in 2023.
The overall progress in implementing the Association Agreement increased by 5% over the year and reached 77%, according to the annual Report on the Implementation of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the European Union on the government's European Integration Portal.
It is noted that during the year, Ukraine adopted a number of European integration environmental laws, in particular
- Law No. 2973-IX "On the State System of Environmental Monitoring, Information on the State of the Environment (Environmental Information) and Information Support for Environmental Management"
- Law No. 3227-IX "On Improvement and Digitalization of the Environmental Impact Assessment Procedure";
- Law No. 3116-IX "On Ukraine's Accession to the Minamata Convention on Mercury";
- Law No. 3150-IX "On Ratification of the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Additional Protocol on Liability and Compensation to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety";
- Law No. 3248-IX "On Ratification of the International Labor Organization Convention No. 170 on Safety in the Use of Chemicals at Work".
The Cabinet of Ministers also adopted a number of resolutions to implement the Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers and bylaws necessary to implement the waste reform launched by Law No. 2320-IX On Waste Management.
In addition, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources worked to implement the Water Strategy until 2050, improve air quality, and implement European requirements for forest seeds and planting material.
Implementation is also ongoing:
- The Roadmap for Cooperation under the Memorandum of Understanding between Ukraine and the EU on Strategic Partnership in Critical Raw Materials;
- Agreement between Ukraine and the EU on Ukraine's participation in the Civil Protection Mechanism for 2023-2024.
Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in 2022, Ukraine fulfilled 77% of its European integration commitments in the area of the environment. Environmental progress reached 16%.
As EcoPolitic previously reported, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Ruslan Strilets is convinced that in 2026 Ukraine will be able to complete the implementation of most European environmental directives and regulations.
