Ukraine will become the leading hub of green energy in Europe – Energy Minister

The green transition and the development of RES are key tasks of the Energy Strategy of Ukraine

Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko says Ukraine will become a leading green energy hub in the European Community, combining energy production with technology development.

At the COP28 climate conference, he emphasized that renewable energy sources are an element of the country's energy security, the Energy Ministry reports.

"The war showed that the development of RES is more important than just the issue of generation. It is an element of the country's energy security. And this experience, which Ukraine has learned, is relevant for Europe and the whole world," Galushchenko said.

He emphasized that the synchronization of the Ukrainian energy system with the European ENTSO-E in the first weeks of the full-scale war allowed not only to support the stability of the Ukrainian energy network, but also strengthened European partners. The solidarity of partners will help to further strengthen the continent's energy security, in particular by integrating Ukraine into European energy markets.

"Renewable energy sources are an important component of our strategy for the future. We are already working on the development of relevant projects. And this corresponds to the vision of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi: Ukraine will become the energy hub of Europe," he emphasized.

It is worth noting that at COP28, the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security of Italy agreed to cooperate in the field of energy transition and renewable energy sources, reports the Government portal.

"The green transition and the development of renewable energy are defined as one of the key tasks of the Energy Strategy of Ukraine until 2050," said Deputy Minister Svitlana Grynchuk. "The deepening of cooperation in these fields with our Italian partners is of great importance for Ukraine, and we are glad to sign the corresponding memorandum today."

It is noted that the parties agreed on cooperation in the field of energy transition and RES, in particular during the post-war recovery for the decarbonization of the entire energy sector.

The memorandum envisages cooperation on:

  • technology transfer and capacity building in the renewable energy and energy efficiency sector;
  • exchange of best practices and knowledge in the energy transition and innovative technologies in the process of decarbonization;
  • accelerating the deployment and use of renewable hydrogen, biogas and biomethane;
  • strengthening public participation and sharing best practices in energy system management, including the drafting of National Energy and Climate Plans (NECP).

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in 2022, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared that Ukraine can and must become a green energy hub for Europe.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the Cabinet of Ministers approved Energy strategy of Ukraine to 2050, which reflects the goals of the European Green Deal and the achievement of carbon neutrality of the energy sector by 2050.
