The Blue-Green Corridors concept will help implement 7 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals

In Rivne, the city council approved the "Blue-Green Corridors" Concept, which provides for adaptation to climate change and preservation of biodiversity.

This is a comprehensive long-term spatial development strategy that unites all spheres of life to create a comfortable environment based on the principles of sustainability, convenience and respect for the environment, reports the public organization "Ekoklub" on Facebook.

It is noted that the concept provides:

  • implementation of climate change adaptation measures;
  • preservation of biodiversity;
  • creation of additional opportunities for recreation and recovery in green areas of the community;
  • development of sustainable mobility.

"In the perspective of the development of blue-green corridors, it will be easier for residents to adapt to heat stress caused by the rise in temperature due to climate change and to flooding caused by heavy downpours, the frequency of which will also increase. All in all, this will not only make the life of the citizens more comfortable, but will also allow us to preserve the biodiversity of our city," said Olga Liashchuk, project coordinator of the Ecoclub.

The decision of the city council regarding the concept explained that the network of blue-green corridors structures the urban space and combines ecological, adaptive and social functions of open space.

It is noted that the concept will help implement 7 of the 17 goals declared at the UN summit on sustainable development, namely:

  • ensuring a healthy lifestyle and well-being of people of any age (goal 3);
  • ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water resources and sanitation (goal 6);
  • creation of sustainable infrastructure, promotion of comprehensive and sustainable industrialization and innovation (goal 9);
  • ensuring openness, safety, vitality and ecological sustainability of cities and settlements (goal 11);
  • taking urgent measures to combat climate change and its consequences (goal 13);
  • protection and restoration of terrestrial ecosystems and promotion of their rational use, rational forest use, combating desertification, stopping and reversing the process of land degradation and halting the loss of biodiversity (goal 15);
  • strengthening partnerships for sustainable development (goal 17).
