The oaks probably interfered with the plans of the builders

In Kyiv, near the Zhytomyrska metro station, unknown persons sawed down two two-hundred-year-old oaks, which were the remnants of a primeval forest.

Concerned citizens were urged to turn to the police with the demand to record the crime and ensure the protection and protection of the oak trees, which can still be restored, reports dendrologist Volodymyr Vetrogradskyi on Facebook.

He emphasized that for oak stalked the age of 200 years is only the beginning of life, because these trees can be 1000-1500 years old.

"These trees, which have now become a part of the city, are its decoration and value, which is obvious without words. You can even see traces of large wounds on them, which were self-inflicted after the first road works were carried out," he said Vetrogradskyi.

He suggested that the oaks had been sawed down about 2-3 days ago to prepare for destruction. After all, they stood in the way of plans to build a free plot. On the other side of the road, near the natural monument of local importance, three healthy trees of other species up to 40 years old have already been cut down.

Vetrogradsky called on concerned citizens write a statement to the police with a reference to:

  • Article 153 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses: "Destruction or damage to green spaces in populated areas."
  • Article 152 of the Code of Administrative Offenses: "Damage to public works".

"This is a reason to finally approve at the legislative level proportionate fees for the destruction or damage of green spaces, according to the type of tree. And they should be such that no one else would have the desire to do something similar. This is what we need now, not later," the dendrologist emphasized.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in Kyiv, about 10 trees were cut down in the yard of a high-rise building on Sichovyh Striltsiv Street, 55, in the Shevchenkiv district in the Kudryavets area, in order to arrange a parking lot.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, construction of the OZON Concept House residential complex, which involves the felling of 1,691 trees, has started again in Kyiv in Zvirynetskyi Square, in the Pechersk District.
