Mowing restrictions are a common practice in many European cities

In Kyiv, 25 decorative meadows will be planted with minimal mowing instead of traditional lawns.

This will save resources and create ideal conditions for the development and protection of biodiversity, Oleksandr Vozniy, head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the KMDA, reports on Facebook.

He emphasized that experimental lawns will be created in each district of the city under different conditions, in particular on:

  • transport interchanges;
  • distribution lanes;
  • areas along highways;
  • in active recreation areas.

Vozniy said that ornamental lawns and mowing restrictions are a common practice in many European cities, including London, Vienna, Berlin, etc. This gives insects the opportunity to feed on pollen and nectar, that is, it promotes the development of biodiversity.

He also emphasized that the mowing height on parterre lawns should be at least 2-4 cm, and on ordinary lawns - 3-5 cm.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in the spring of 2022, the Kyiv City Council was asked to ban grass mowing in the city, because it harms the environment and requires significant financial costs.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in the winter period of 2022-2023 in Kyiv, granite chips were used in 50 parks and squares to combat ice.
