During the bloom of algae, potentially toxic and allergic substances are released into the water

In the Dnieper, on the beach of Monastyrsky Island, the water turned green due to the blooming of algae.

However, some local residents, despite the ban, still bathe, reports dnepr.info.

It is noted that in addition to algae, there are also many higher aquatic plants in the water.

The material explained that the blooming of the Dnipro River in the hot summer months is a consequence of the mass reproduction of blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria. With a significant increase in the biomass of algae (up to 500 g/m3 and above), biological pollution begins to appear, as a result of which the quality of water deteriorates significantly. In particular, its color, pH, viscosity changes, transparency decreases.

It is worth noting that it is dangerous to bathe in water during blooming. After all, algae release the products of their vital activity into the water. These substances can be toxic to humans and cause allergic reactions.

"However, despite the green color of the water and the ban on swimming, there are brave people among the townspeople who climb into the water," the article says.

It is noted that the bathing season has not been opened in the Dnipro for the second year in a row for safety reasons.
