Perpetrators face imprisonment from 2 to 5 years

In the Chernihiv region, the owner and two employees of a hazardous waste disposal company were informed of the suspicion that they were deliberately taking drilling mud to a solid waste landfill.

The violation lasted from October 2021 to April 2023 and caused 32 million hryvnias worth of environmental damage, reports Headquarters of the National Police in Chernihiv Region.

The report explained that drilling mud is formed during oil production and is a hazardous waste. The solid waste landfill is unable to ensure the utilization and removal of such waste.

It is noted that an excess of content was found in the soil:

  • oil products;
  • lead;
  • nickel;
  • cobalt

The law enforcement officers informed the owner of the enterprise, as well as its director and manager, of the suspicion of committing, according to a previous conspiracy, the contamination of land with harmful waste, which caused serious consequences. For committing a criminal offence, perpetrators face imprisonment for a term of 2 to 5 years.

"Investigative actions are ongoing," the message added.

Earlier, Ecopolitic wrote, that in the Khortytsia camp area, unknown persons threw out a huge number of bags with chemical fertilizers.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in the Vyshgorod district of Kyiv region, more than 100 metal barrels, which contained dangerous substances, including petroleum products and heavy metals of the 1st class of toxicity, were buried at a landfill.
