Specialists of the State Environmental Inspectorate of the Southwestern District found that the cause of large-scale fish pestilence in the river. Southern Bug within Nikolaev, as well as in the Hadzhibey estuary in the Odesa region, was the excess of ammonium nitrogen in the water and a decrease in soluble oxygen due to hot weather.
Eco-inspectors reported the results of the analysis of water samples from these reservoirs on Facebook.
On July 5, experts recorded a massive freeze of bulls and fry of various fish species in the Matveevka microdistrict of the city of Nikolaev. They took samples and found an excess of the maximum permissible concentrations of ammonium nitrogen by 3 times and a decrease in soluble oxygen by 1.5 times due to abnormally high air temperature.

A few days earlier, inspectors took samples in the Khadzhibey estuary near the village of Paliivka of the Odesa district, as local residents also reported a mass death of fish.

The results of laboratory studies of water from the estuary showed an excess of the maximum permissible concentration of ammonium nitrogen by a striking 66 (!!!) times. Ecologists did not name a specific reason for such a significant nitrogen content.
Also, experts found a decrease in the content of soluble oxygen by 1.3 times due to high air temperature, which also leads to the death of aquatic biological resources.
As reported by EcoPolitic, a similar situation was observed in Odesa last year as well.
