The calculation is based on the prices of emission allowances within the EU ETS emissions trading system

The European Commission will announce the first quarterly price of certificates under the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on April 7. This price will be aligned with the state of the European Union's carbon market.

This was reported by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Taxation and Customs Union.

The CBAM mechanism applies to importers in a number of manufacturing sectors with high greenhouse gas emissions. Starting in February 2027, they will have to purchase CBAM certificates to cover imports made in 2026.

From 2027, the European Commission will calculate the weekly price of CBAM certificates, but in 2026, such calculations will be made on a quarterly basis. To determine the price, the European Commission will use the average auction price for emission allowances under the EU ETS.

When to expect the next prices?

The European Commission will calculate the CBAM certificate’s quarterly price during the first calendar week of the following quarter. These figures will be published on the first working day of the week after which the calculation was carried out.

The prices will be published both on the European Commission’s CBAM page and directly in the CBAM registry.

The quarterly prices will be announced on the following dates:

  • Q1 – April 7, 2026;
  • Q2 – July 6, 2026;
  • Q3 – October 5, 2026;
  • Q4 – January 4, 2027.

EcoPolitic earlier reported on the publication of final baseline values for CBAM for various product types.

The European Union is working to expand the list of sectors that will fall under the CBAM mechanism. In particular, this concerns automobile parts, washing machines, and refrigerators.
