Sweden has strong experience in the field of waste management

Sweden is ready to help Ukraine in the implementation of projects in the field of waste management in accordance with EU best practices.

It was discussed on online meetings of the deputy minister of environmental protection and natural resources Evgeny Fedorenko with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Sweden to Ukraine Tobias Tyberg, the Ministry of Environment reports on Facebook.

They discussed issues of cooperation in the field of waste management and chemical safety.

"Sweden has been and remains a reliable partner of Ukraine, which has always expressed readiness to provide expert and practical assistance to solve our problems," the article says.

Fedorenko said that there are changes in the construction of a qualitatively new waste management system in Ukraine. Currently, the Ministry of Environment is actively working on sectoral draft laws and government decisions (at least 30 normative legal acts to be adopted). They will make it possible to implement all the principles and norms of the new framework law "On waste management".

He noted that the Ministry of Environment is working on a basic draft law on containers and packaging to establish a waste sorting system. This will make it possible to introduce the extended responsibility of the producer according to the European model.

The ministry is also working on financial instruments to stimulate separate garbage collection.

In addition, Fedorenko emphasized that pilot projects for the construction of modern waste processing plants in the Kyiv region will allow solving the problems with waste in the region. According to him, their successful implementation will be an example for other communities not to stand still, as well as a positive signal for investors.

He also told to international partners about mechanisms for further attraction and protection of investments for the development of the relevant infrastructure in Ukraine.

Tyberg assured that Sweden's intentions to support and help Ukraine remain unchanged. The country has quite strong experience and is ready to provide expert assistance for the implementation of projects in accordance with EU best practices in the field of waste management.

"The Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Ruslan Strilets, set us the task of studying the practical experience of Sweden in the step-by-step implementation of extended producer responsibility, because we strive to create one of the best modern European models in our country. We are also interested in the experience of our colleagues regarding the implementation of the requirements of the 2019 EU Directive (2019/904) on single-use plastic. After all, we have a task from the President to continue moving along the European path in the fight against plastic accumulation," Fedorenko noted.

He also thanked Sweden and Tyberg for their invaluable support to Ukraine in such a difficult historical period.

Earlier, Ecopolitic wrote, that the ambassador of the Kingdom of Sweden to Ukraine, Tobias Tyberg, at a meeting with the head of the Ministry of Environment, Ruslan Strilets, assured that Sweden is ready to support Ukraine on the way to regulation of the sphere of waste.

As EcoPolitic reported earlier, the Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Ruslan Strilets said that civilized waste management – a mandatory condition for Ukraine's accession to the EU.
