New opportunities for Ukrainian business within the framework of the European green course

GoLocal together with partners strive to create and support an ecosystem of startups and innovative solutions in the field of decarbonization in Ukraine

At the end of 2019, the European Commission adopted the European Green Deal. The EGD is a road map of measures that will transform the European Union into an efficient, sustainable and competitive economy, and will determine the means of transforming Europe into the world's first climate-neutral continent by 2050

Accession of Ukraine to the EGD

The adoption of the EGD will have a significant impact on Ukraine and on all sectors of the state's economy. At the same time, Ukrainian business faced a number of challenges with the adoption of the EGD and its implementation in Ukraine: adaptation of business models, search for innovative solutions that will help not only to "stay afloat", but also to significantly strengthen its competitiveness on the European market

Challenges for small and medium enterprises

At the same time, the key obstacle in this is the so-called "information asymmetry": market participants with better access to information about advanced technologies have better positions. Due to the lack of information about the latest technologies, startups, and developments in the field of decarbonization, Ukrainian business risks losing opportunities and being left behind by European companies that are already adapting to the requirements of the EGD.

"Ukrainian business does not really understand how to attract grant and fund money and how to work with it. The issue is also to reorient the understanding of which financial instruments can be used to build certain changes, and who can be a beneficiary."

That is why in December 2021 the NGO GoLocal together with partners with support of International Foundation Renaissance and the European Union, have started research to find the best technologies in the field of decarbonization in terms of their effectiveness, cost and ease of implementation in Ukraine.

Despite the full-scale war and all the difficulties, the team has completed the Research and is ready to share its results.

The main goal of the project "Dissemination of the best business practices in the field of decarbonization for the implementation of the green course was to help Ukrainian businesses to provide access to a wider application of decarbonization know-how in all spheres of the Ukrainian economy, in particular at the local level. This will help to create new opportunities for Ukrainian business in the field of decarbonization and to change the paradigm of the perception of EGD from threat to opportunity.

For this, 3 mutually complementary components were allocated within the framework of the project:

  1. Conducting research to find the best technologies in the field of decarbonization in terms of their effectiveness, cost and ease of implementation. The results of the study can be found by the link https://decarbonization.golocal-ukraine.com/research/
  2. Creating a map of startups that already offer solutions in the field of decarbonization and a map of technologies and innovative solutions in the field of decarbonization within Ukraine and the EU. The finalized map of startups is at the link https://decarbonization.golocal-ukraine.com/startups-map/
  3. Creation of an online platform and conducting a presentation Research and development of the project, which will help Ukrainian startups and innovators to take into account the aspect of decarbonization in their own projects. Project website https://decarbonization.golocal-ukraine.com.

As a result, GoLocal together with partners strive to create and support an ecosystem of startups and innovative solutions in the field of decarbonization in Ukraine

This will help to show Ukrainian business new opportunities in connection with the adoption of the EGD and provide access to a wider application of decarbonization know-how in all spheres of the Ukrainian economy, in particular at the local level.

The project is implemented with the support of the European Union and the International Renaissance Foundation within the grant component of the EU4USociety project.
