Scientists from the University of Stavanger (Norway) have launched the world's first micro gas turbine plant operating on 100% hydrogen.

It is reported with reference to the press service of the university New Atlas .

The turbine is located in a plant in the southwest of Norway, which is subordinate to the university. It produces electricity and heat. From mid-May, the operation of the gas plant was switched to 100% hydrogen fuel.

"We have set a world record for burning hydrogen in gas microturbines. No one has ever done it at this level before," said Prof. Mohsen Asadi, head of the plant's research team.

The efficiency of a hydrogen turbine is lower than natural gas, but allows you to use existing infrastructure and forget about CO2 emissions forever.

In the work, the researchers focused on the possibility of switching to hydrogen fuel without a large-scale replacement of equipment. According to scientists, this needs adaptation of the existing gas infrastructure and new energy conversion technology, that is, the turbine technology itself.

It is noted that after switching to hydrogen fuel, researchers will study the operation of the plant to determine how they can increase the power for the maximum amount of clean energy.

Before EcoPolicy reported that Germany and Norway were considering construction of a hydrogen pipeline , which will connect the two countries in order to avoid Russian energy.
