It will also help to achieve climate neutrality

The National Commission for state regulation in the fields of energy and utilities (NCREU) approved the decision to promote the development of biomethane production.

The agency approved the draft resolution "On approving changes to some resolutions of the NCRECP on promoting the development of biomethane production" and will accept comments and suggestions to the document, the Commission's website says.

It is noted that the use of renewable gases, in particular biomethane, is considered as one of the ways to increase energy independence. Biomethane is considered a cost-effective way of decarbonizing the energy and economy of Ukraine.

The message emphasized that the document provides for:

  • improving access conditions for biomethane producers to gas infrastructure facilities;
  • leveling of technical restrictions on the transfer of biomethane to the gas distribution system, which will stimulate biomethane producers to increase the volume of gas production.

"The approval of this draft resolution is an important step for the development of biomethane production in Ukraine and the achievement of climate neutrality, which is a strategic direction of reforming the energy sector in EU member states and Ukraine," the Commission said.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the State Agency for Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving announced that in 2022 a legislative basis was created for the development of biomethane production, which is a promising alternative to natural gas.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, People's Deputy from the "Servant of the People" faction, Oleksandr Haydu, said that Ukraine can replace imported natural gas in the volume of up to 10 billion m3 per year thanks to the development of biomethane production until 2030.
