Specialists of the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office have sent to court the case of a deputy of the Volyn Regional Council, who was caught taking a $35,000 bribe.
He extorted money from an entrepreneur who planned to set up a waste disposal company in one of the region's communities, NABU reports.
According to media, it is Valentyn Koshelnyk.
It is noted that Koshelnyk promised to ensure that the local council would make the decisions necessary to obtain ownership of the land plot in return for a "reward".
"During April-May 2023, the official received part of the illegal profit in the amount of $10,000 in the form of a "deposit", the report says.
NABU said that the official was detained on September 12 after receiving the balance in the amount of $25,000. He exchanged this money for euros in order to "cover his tracks". He was informed of the suspicion on September 13, and the investigation was completed in November.
Suspilne said that Koshelnyk was released on bail in the amount of 900,000 hryvnias, and the court ordered him not to leave the Volyn region and to appear before the investigator, the prosecutor and the court at the first request. If found guilty under part 3 of article 369-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the deputy faces imprisonment from three to eight years.>
