In Izmail, Odesa Oblast, a lake of white-green liquid with a pungent odor formed at the bottom of a quarry near the Druzhba gardening cooperative in early January.
These waters pose a risk of environmental hazards, as they can get into reclamation channels for watering gardens, as well as municipal drinking water wells, according to a story by Yug. Today.
The head of the cooperative, Oleksii Buhaichuk, said that five years ago, rainwater flowed into the quarry, forming a kind of pond for poultry.
"This is already an authorized discharge, because you can see that it's chemicals, not melted snow or rainwater," he said. "Even the color of the water makes it clear that something is not normal here.
Buhaichuk emphasized that there are municipal wells near the "lake". Wastewater can get into the soil and contaminate it. Another concern is that the amount of liquid is rapidly increasing.
It is noted that the white-green liquid flows through the "downspouts" from the territory of the former "Etalon" plant, where several enterprises currently operate. A layer of white-brown foam is visible on the surface of the reservoir.
Bugaichuk assumes that the sewage is discharged "beyond the meter" and the city does not receive money for its cleaning.
The material said that the police were called at the beginning of January. Law enforcement officers recorded the presence of liquid in the quarry and took samples for examination. The residents of the dachas also appealed to the mayor Andrii Abramchenko. The flow of liquid stopped for a while, but recently resumed again.
Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in October near Odesa in the village of Marynivka, eco-inspectors discovered a pipe from which the farm empties return water into the smooth Khadzhibey estuary.
As EcoPolitic previously reported, residents of Okhtyrka, in Sumy Oblast, complained about the discharge of probably untreated liquid waste from the Bogodukhiv meat processing plant into Lake Ignatenkovo.
