The city authorities ignored the cleaning of the landfill

In Cherkasy region, a court has ordered the Korsun-Shevchenkivsk city council to clean up a natural landfill covering almost 3 hectares.

Prosecutors filed the lawsuit, the press service of the Cherkasy Regional Prosecutor's Office reports on Facebook.

It is noted that the solid waste landfill was formed on the territory of the Korsun-Shevchenkivska united territorial community. However, local authorities, having the appropriate authority, did not take measures to eliminate it.

"Since the mountains of garbage pollute the environment and adversely affect human health, the prosecutor's office filed a lawsuit," the press service said.

The prosecutor's office added that they are monitoring the execution of the court decision.

Illegal landfills are known to pose a threat to the environment and human health. As waste begins to decompose under the influence of precipitation, sunlight, and temperature changes, decomposition products contaminate soil, groundwater, and air. Unlike landfills, they have no protective barriers or insulating cover. In addition, such dumps attract rodents and insects that carry dangerous infections.

Illegal dumps also increase the risk of fires.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, Serhiy Otreshko, Head of the Department of Road Transport Infrastructure and Ecology in Cherkasy, said that the city's garbage situation is close to critical.
