A city in Sumy region wants to completely abandon gas

The complete restoration and modernization of Trostianets will require about €400 million of investment

For Trostianets, in Sumy Oblast, a master plan was developed for the restoration and further development of energy systems, which provides for the gradual complete abandonment of gas burning at power plants.

The plan envisages the modernization of heat and water supply, wastewater treatment, landfills and the introduction of a waste processing zone, as well as the construction of powerful HPPs, reports Interfax-Ukraine.

"The elements of our master plan are based on the fact that all investments are aligned with the goals of sustainable development. These are clean water, cheap and "clean" energy. Self-sufficient cities and communities and responsible consumption. This is what the proposed investment strategies are based on," said the managing partner. CES Clean Energy Solutions Andreas Helbl, who presented the plan.

He added that all investments should meet the goals of sustainable development.

The Cabinet of Ministers has identified six settlements, including Trostyanets, where reconstruction will take place comprehensively and according to new principles.

Trostyanets was under occupation from February 25 to March 26. The city suffered significant destruction.

The material said that the master plan for the city was developed by international experts from June 2022 to February 2023.

"Electricity and heat supply networks in Trostyanka are partially destroyed. The concept of further development of energy systems is the same as in Eastern and Central Europe," Helbl said.

He added that two separate district heating strategies for the periphery and the center have been developed for the city.

Heat generation using biogas is promising for the center, and individual heat pumps for private houses. It is also proposed to build a solar power plant on a plot of 13.5 hectares and rooftop HPPs for thousands of private houses.

It is expected that solar energy will be able to provide up to 77% of the city's needs.

Helbl emphasized that in the long term, the city and the region will be able to become energy independent thanks to the processing of agricultural waste, including the use of biogas and biomass.

The master plan also proposes rebuilding the landfill into a more modern and better organized landfill for waste collection and processing.

It is noted that the plan covers the water supply and drainage system. It is proposed to restore the existing infrastructure and connect separated networks. In addition, the construction of a new sewage treatment plant is proposed.

Helbl hopes to attract international and private investment in these programs. After all, the implementation of the proposed measures involves enormous costs, namely:

  • water supply/sewerage – €105.93 million;
  • waste management - €19.6 million;
  • energy generation, heating and hot water supply - €18.827 million;
  • investments in SES - €11.125 million;
  • restoration of the housing stock - about €217 million (€173 million for single-family houses and €20 million for high-rise buildings);
  • transport and mobility – €27 million.

The article emphasized that the city needs new transport interchanges and alternative mobility infrastructure (bicycles, scooters, etc.). In addition, Trostianets urgently needs to update the public transport fleet, which was partially destroyed and looted by the occupiers.

It is noted that the modernization of the transport sector will involve the gradual transition of public transport from fuel from fossil sources to alternative types of energy carriers.

The plan also provides for the restoration of residential buildings and street lighting, taking into account the requirements of the EU Directive on energy efficiency.

"New buildings must be certified as having zero energy consumption or a positive energy balance. Thermal modernization of buildings must be carried out," Helbl emphasized.

Some private houses are proposed to be connected to the central networks during restoration, but the majority should be energy self-sufficient (heat pump + rooftop station). Several options are proposed for the reconstruction of street lighting, including solar-powered lights.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in Sumy region, the fire at the Trostyanets chocolate factory, which lasted for more than a day in March 2022, caused damage to the environment amounting to 10.6 million hryvnias. The Russian military did not allow rescuers to enter the territory of the factory for extinguishing.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, Borodyanka, in the Kyiv region, is planned to be rebuilt as one of the first new ecological towns, all systems of which will work on modern energy-efficient technologies.
