On February 15, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources issued a license for hazardous waste management to the Waste Management Center.
The WMC became the third company to receive a license after the hazardous waste management market was completely shut down on January 9, the Ministry of Environment reports.
Due to the inconsistency of the actions of the Cabinet of Ministers and the Ministry of Environment with the requirements of Law No. 2320-IX "On Waste Management," the hazardous waste management market collapsed on January 9, 2024 – there was not a single licensed company, and businesses and medical institutions could not dispose of this type of waste legally. About 200 companies had to obtain new licenses within a month, instead of the six months stipulated by the Waste Management Law and the legally guaranteed period of at least 2 months.
The Centralized Waste Management Center was granted the right to recycle/recover inorganic materials, treat and store hazardous waste such as:
- batteries and accumulators;
- waste equipment containing hazardous components and hazardous components removed from them;
- electrical and electronic equipment containing dangerous components;
- vehicles removed from service.
It is worth noting that the "Waste Management Center" received a license on the fifth attempt, because the Ministry of Environment left four previous applications for a license without consideration (the first on January 19).
Earlier, Ecopolitic wrote, that on February 1, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources issued a license for the right to carry out hazardous waste management business activities of the company "KHADO – TECHNOLOGY" and on February 2 – NVK "UKREKOPROM".
Earlier, EcoPolitic spoke with the president of the Association of Environmental Professionals (PAEW), the general director of the "Office of Sustainable Solutions" Lyudmila Tsyganok about the causes and consequences of the collapse of the hazardous waste market.
