Ukraine has significant potential for the development of bioenergy

Ukraine has signed a Memorandum with the Lithuanian Energy Agency, within the framework of which the partners will develop proposals for medium- and long-term plans for the restoration of the energy system.

The main focus of the projects will be the use of bioenergy in the system of centralized heat supply, the State Agency for Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine reports in Facebook

It is noted that representatives of the State Energy Efficiency Agency and the Embassy of Lithuania in Ukraine held an expert meeting after signing the document. They discussed areas of cooperation in the field of sustainable energy development and increasing the use of alternative fuels.

The energy attaché of the Embassy of Lithuania in Ukraine, Laura Pushinskaite, emphasized that Lithuania is currently implementing the project "Recovery of Ukraine: cooperation in the energy sector".

The press service explained that the Ukrainian-Lithuanian team will work on solutions for the use of biomass for centralized heat supply, in particular, using highly efficient cogeneration technology. It is also planned to develop financial instruments to attract the private sector and prepare project proposals.

"Ukraine has significant potential for the development of bioenergy. We appreciate Lithuania's initiative to share its unique experience of transitioning to thermal energy from biomass. For Ukrainian communities that suffer from energy terror from Russia, it is extremely important to have effective alternatives that will allow them to become less energy dependent," said Olena Lenska, director of the renewable energy development department of the State Energy Efficiency Agency.

It is noted that according to the results of the parties' negotiations:

  • agreed to cooperate within the framework of focus groups;
  • conduct a detailed analysis of the state of the heat supply sector and the possibilities of switching to biomass;
  • consider potential projects using alternative fuels in communities.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that Ukraine signed a memorandum with the Lithuanian International Energy Cluster regarding energy efficiency and decarbonization. Cooperation will also include the development of alternative fuels and highly efficient cogeneration.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) will help launch the State Fund for decarbonization and energy-efficient transformation in Ukraine.
