Italy will help Ukraine recover reparations from Russia for environmental damage

The time will come when Ukraine will be able to bill Russia for the damage to the environment, said the Italian minister

Italy is ready to support Ukraine in preparing a document on environmental damage, which will be needed to receive reparations from Russia.

The Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Ruslan Strilets  assured the Minister of Ecological Transition of Italy Roberto Chingolani, reported the Mindaugas .

During the online meeting, they discussed the recording of environmental crimes of the Russian Federation in Ukraine, methods of their calculation and the experience of Italy in the development of monitoring equipment.

"It is important for us to record the damage to Ukraine's environment from the actions of russian troops, because in the future we plan to collect reparations from Russia. I am confident that Italian experts could help Ukraine with knowledge and experience," said Strilets.

In response, Chingolani said Italy was ready to help Ukraine calculate the damage to the environment from Russian aggression.

"Italy opposes russia's invasion of Ukraine and the crimes committed by russian troops. Although environmental damage is not a priority at the moment, the time will come when Ukraine will be able to hold Russia accountable for the damage to the environment. Italy is ready to support Ukraine is preparing a relevant document, which will be needed to receive reparations from Russia, "said the Italian minister.

The ministers then agreed to synchronize their efforts in documenting russia's crimes against the Ukrainian environment and to set up a corresponding Ukrainian-Italian working group to analyze the damage to the environment from Russian troops. In addition, they agreed on the exchange of technologies in the field of environmental monitoring.

As reported EcoPolitics earlier, experts warned that the wounds inflicted by the russian army on forests, steppes and reservoirs of Ukraine will remain for decades, and the legacy of the war will continue to threaten of how the guns subside.
