Next year, Ukraine would like to open European integration negotiations under Cluster 4, Green Agenda and Sustainable Connections. In the summer of 2025, the EU screening will be completed, and our country is ready to start the relevant negotiations.
This was stated by representatives of the Ukrainian delegation to the COP29, including Deputy Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine Viktoriia Kyreeva, during a meeting with the Director of the Energy Community Secretariat, Artur Lorkowski, and European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson, the Ministry of Environment reports on Telegram.
The European Commission officials were told about the steps taken by Ukraine to start negotiations on Cluster 4:
- The framework climate law was adopted. It sets a goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 – at the same time as the rest of the EU.
- A long-term strategy for low-carbon development to achieve climate neutrality is already being developed. Ukraine will present its first modeling specifically at SOR29.
- Back in 2020, the law on monitoring, reporting and verification of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) was adopted.
- The National Energy and Climate Plan (NPEC) was approved.
- An action plan for the implementation of the Emissions Trading System (ETS) will be published soon.
"Such meetings are important so that all interested parties are oriented in the plans of the European Commission for the next 5 years. After all, the candidate countries must meet the requirements of the EU", Kadri Simson noted.
