EU calls on governments to ensure adequate funding to combat climate change

The European Parliament has officially adopted its own priorities for the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Brazil (COP30). In particular, the Parliament called for a renewed commitment to limiting global warming to 1.5°C.

This was reported by the press service of the European Parliament on its official website.

The resolution, prepared by the Committee on Environment, Climate and Food Safety, states that the European Union should continue to set ambitious goals for its climate policy, in particular, to prioritize

  1. Economic efficiency;
  2. Competitiveness of the European economy;
  3. Social inclusion;
  4. A high level of environmental protection.

In particular, the text of the Resolution emphasizes the need to end dependence on fossil fuels, gradually eliminate subsidies for them, and accelerate energy transformation.

MEPs call on EU countries to ensure adequate funding for climate change measures, in particular to address the debt crises of European countries. After all, a number of countries are vulnerable to climate change and simplify the procedures for financing measures to combat global temperature rise.

The EU also calls on the international community to pay more attention to the impact of military conflicts on the climate.

When and what will be discussed at the SOP30 conference

The 30th UN COP30 conference will be held from November 10 to 21, 2025 in Belem, Brazil. The summit will focus on the efforts needed to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C, the presentation of new Nationally Determined Contributions and progress in fulfilling financial commitments made at the previous COP29 conference.

In November, the EU will set new emission reduction targets for 2035 and 2040 at COP30.

Additionally, the European Parliament Committee approved three key requirements for the UN COP30.
