Old jeans energy: unnecessary clothes are accepted for disposal

Cost of disposal of textile waste: UAH 10/kg

In Kyiv, old jeans and other clothes, scraps of fabric and other textile waste can be disposed of safely (high-temperature incineration of textiles).

This method is safe for the environment and a source of replenishment of electricity for the city, reports the "Waste Management Center" on Facebook.

Currently, there is no plant in Ukraine that processes textile waste, and the only available option is such incineration.

Every year, 13 million km of denim fabric is produced in the world, of which 400 million meters become production residues. They can be used to circle the entire globe several times. This is only one type of fabric, there is also cotton, polyester and others.

"Textile waste is a global world problem in the 21st century. According to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the amount of textile waste in the world increased by 811% from 1960 to 2015,"  the inputs management center noted.

In 2015, the amount of such waste amounted to 16 million tons, about 66% of this waste ended up in landfills.

"In Ukraine, the situation is even worse, but we do not have official statistics," the report said.

Even if you buy clothes that are made of recycled plastic and that are subject to further processing, it is almost impossible to find a place in Ukraine that does this.

Cost of disposal of textile waste: UAH 10/kg.

"We recommend that you dispose of only those clothes that are completely unfit for wear, as well as rags, scraps of fabric, etc. If the clothes are in good condition, the best option would be to donate them to charity," the message urged.

You can hand over waste for disposal at the Center for Recycling in the following ways:

  • bring in person at the address: Kyiv, st. Polovnyka Shutov, 16 (Analytprilad plant), from Monday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.;
  • send by new mail (sending at your expense);
  • order delivery to your address in Kyiv.
You can contact the Central Office at the following number: +38 (098) 043-03-03.
