As of the morning of March 22, the tanker Greta K, which carries diesel and aviation fuel, has been burning for about 20 hours off the coast of Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean.

There is a risk of environmental pollution, reports Puente de Mando.

It is noted that the fire started on Tuesday, March 21, around 3:30 p.m. The Maltese-flagged tanker was towed away from the coast.

The material added that 12 of the 19 crew members were evacuated, the remaining people and the ship's captain are monitoring the technical condition of the vessel.

It is noted that the port authorities of Douro, Leixoens and Viana do Castelo sent three fire-fighting tugs and two rescue boats to the tanker.

"Everything remains the same as last night. The vessel carrying refined fuel remains approximately 18 kilometers from the shoreline and has two port tugs assisting, maintaining position and cooling the structures with water jets," said Port Commander Aveiro Luzi, reports Porto Canal.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in Venezuela, a fire broke out for the third time in a year at one of the country's most important oil facilities in Cardona. Local residents shared a video on social networks showing how the oil refinery tower is burning, and the flames are spreading to infrastructure facilities.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, a large-scale leak of methane in the Baltic Sea, which occurred due to an explosion on the Nord Stream pipelines, may cause a new climate catastrophe. According to preliminary German estimates, about 300,000 metric tons of methane were released into the atmosphere.
