The night-time attack on Kyiv carried out by Russia on 2 July led to a fire at one of the capital’s industrial sites. As a result, fuel and lubricants from the site’s premises entered the Opechen Lake cascade in the Obolon district via the stormwater drainage system. Municipal services have already taken water samples, whilst emergency services have erected barriers to prevent the pollution from spreading.
According to the Kyiv City State Administration’s Department of Environmental Protection and Climate Change Adaptation, the pollution was detected at the point where the Syrets River flows into Lake Kyrylivske.

Emergency response
The leaks have already been contained using special sorbent booms. The State Emergency Service of Ukraine has confirmed that everything is securely protected. The fuel spill is now isolated and should not reach the other lakes in the cascade.
Samples and next steps
To ascertain the extent of the threat, water samples were taken at three locations — the Syrets River, Lake Kyrylivske, and the point where the water flows into the Dnipro River. To document the consequences, the municipal enterprise ‘Pleso’ contacted the State Environmental Inspectorate.

The results of laboratory tests will reveal what measures need to be taken to restore the ecological condition of the water bodies and to remedy the effects of the pollution.
EcoPolitika previously reported that vegetable oil had entered the Black Sea as a result of an attack on one of the ports in the Odesa region. The oil was washed ashore, in particular, at the Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park, where it contaminated around 10,000 m² of a sand spit.
