This is part of its climate commitment to achieve zero emissions by 2040

The world's largest online commerce platform, Amazon, has announced that it has 100% secured its global operations with renewable energy. This is 7 years earlier than the planned date.

It is reported by ESGtoday.

Amazon first announced its clean energy goal in 2019. Then the company promised to provide all its global operations, including data centers, corporate buildings, shops and fulfillment centers, with 100% renewable energy by 2030. At that time, Amazon covered 42% of its needs through renewable energy.

According to Bloomberg NEF, after that, the company allocated billions of dollars for the development of clean energy and became the largest corporate buyer of renewable energy in the world over the past 4 years. Amazon has invested in more than 500 renewable energy projects around the world, such as:

  • more than 240 solar and wind power plants;
  • 10 energy storage projects;
  • 6 projects on the use of offshore wind power plants;
  • almost 300 local solar panels.

The company said that its renewable energy projects will help avoid approximately 27.8 million tons of CO2 emissions annually when all of these projects are operational.

As Amazon's energy needs continue to grow, the company intends to continue to invest heavily in renewable energy, as well as explore new carbon-free energy sources such as nuclear power, batteries, and new technologies.

Cara Hurst, Amazon's director of sustainability, said:

"Achieving our renewable energy target is an incredible achievement and we are proud of the work we have done to get here 7 years early. We also know that this is only a moment in time and our decarbonisation work will not always be the same every year – we will continue to make progress while constantly evolving on the way to 2040."

As EcoPolitic reported earlier, a study was published in February 2022, the authors of which blamed leading global companies routinely exaggerate or misreport their progress in combating climate change.

In August 2022, we talked about Amazon's intention to invest in the production of "green" hydrogen .
