Ukraine must incorporate European standards into its legislation, particularly regarding drinking water and climate

Next week, the Committee on Environmental Policy and Natural Resources will hold two meetings. On both days—March 30 and April 1—discussions on legislative changes will take place at 12:00 p.m. via videoconference.

This information was announced in posts on the committee’s website.

Water issues

On Monday, March 30, the Committee on Environmental Policy will consider draft law No. 13578. This is a draft law “On Amendments to Certain Laws of Ukraine Regarding the Improvement of Legislative Standards in the Field of Drinking Water Supply and Wastewater Disposal.”

The document, submitted for its second reading, is related to European integration. According to the explanatory note, Ukrainian lawmakers intend to implement European standards regarding drinking water quality, its supply and treatment, as well as wastewater treatment. The document also addresses the harmonization of terminology and the creation of a foundation for developing a methodology for assessing risks in drinking water supply.

Environmental european integration

On Wednesday, April 1, the Environmental Committee will not be reviewing draft laws, but rather a more comprehensive issue regarding climate legislation.

To fulfill its European integration commitments, Ukraine must align its domestic legislation with European Union standards. Therefore, at the meeting, parliamentarians plan to discuss directions for its further improvement under Chapter 27 – "Environment and Climate Change."

EcoPolitic previously reported that Ukraine has prepared a draft law to increase fines for violations of water use regulations. The document has already been approved by the government.
