MPs will also discuss the conversion of "Forests of Ukraine" into a public limited company

On Monday, 15 June, a meeting of the parliamentary committee on environmental policy and natural resource management will take place. Members of Parliament will consider issues relating to drinking water supply standards and forest management. The meeting will begin at 13:00 and will be held via videoconference.

This was announced on the committee’s official website.

European standards in water supply and drainage

The committee will review its opinion on draft law No. 13578 “On amendments to certain laws of Ukraine regarding the improvement of legislative standards in the field of drinking water supply and drainage”.

The document has already been prepared for its second reading. The explanatory note highlights its significance for European integration. The draft law is intended to implement into national legislation the requirements set out in the following European documents:

  • Council Directive 91/271/EEC of 21.05.1991 "Concerning Urban Wastewater Treatment";
  • Directive (EU) 2020/2184 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 16.12.2020 on the quality of water intended for human consumption.

If adopted, the document aims to provide a legislative foundation for the sustainable operation of systems, ensuring safety for humans and the environment. In particular, it calls for enhanced risk assessment at all stages of water supply, treatment, and distribution.

Forest reproduction

The meeting of the Environmental Committee has also been designated as the main one for the draft law No. 9116 "On Forest Reproductive Resources". It has been prepared for the second reading in Parliament.

According to the explanatory note, the document aims to regulate the production and circulation of forest reproductive material within the country as well as its import/export. The draft law sets requirements for the regulation of the production and use of seedlings for forest reproduction, monitoring such materials, their regionalization, and the preservation of genetic resources.

Corporatization of "Forests of Ukraine"

Environmental parliamentarians will also consider matters related to the corporatization of the state specialized enterprise "Forests of Ukraine".

This concerns a letter from committee member Anzhelika Labunska, outlining problems, plans, and timelines for changing the management of the country's main forest user.

EcoPolitic previously reported that "Forests of Ukraine" plans to transform into a joint-stock company. This transformation will be led by former Deputy Minister of Economy Ihor Zubovych.

EcoPolitic also covered, in a separate material, the "effectiveness" with which the state enterprise defends forests and the millions in fines this has entailed.
