The audit covered the entire production chain

The mining and metallurgical enterprise "ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih" has successfully passed a surveillance audit for compliance with the international standard ISO 14001:2015. The audit was conducted by official representatives of the certification body TUV AUSTRIA in Ukraine.

This was reported by the company’s press service.

The ISO 14001:2015 environmental standard is an important component of organizing the operations of facilities working to reduce their negative impact on the environment. It covers a comprehensive set of requirements—from the allocation of responsibilities to the improvement of environmental management.

The certification process for ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih began back in 2007.

"Since then, our environmental management system has operated at an appropriate level and has been constantly improved. Every three years, we undergo recertification, and between these we have two surveillance audits. This year was our first surveillance audit, and it was conducted at a high professional level," said Stanislav Sahaydak, manager of the environmental management system of the Environmental Protection Department.

Comprehensive enterprise review

The auditors checked the environmental impact at every stage of production. Among the divisions that received particular attention were:

  • mining administration of the mining department;
  • coke plant No. 1 of the coke and chemical production;
  • oxygen production in the energy department;
  • long products rolling mill No. 2 in the rolling department;
  • sintering plant and the first blast furnace shop of the iron and steel production department.

The auditors paid special attention to the technical condition of environmental protection equipment, especially all gas cleaning installations. However, they also examined how well the enterprise’s personnel are informed about environmental issues and how environmental management is organized within the asset as a whole.

Conclusions – positive

The enterprise claims that the auditors specifically commended the environmental monitoring system. There are nine automated stations operating within the sanitary protection zone, monitoring the impact of the mining, coke and chemical, and metallurgical production of Arcelor on the atmospheric air.

Among the positive examples are dust control through street watering during the spring-summer period, as well as ecological education activities.

"It is a pleasure to note that we passed this surveillance audit successfully. Thanks to effective management, the enterprise confirmed the stability of the environmental management system and its compliance with international requirements. The results obtained demonstrate a responsible approach to implementing environmental policy, transparency of processes, and ongoing improvement of our activities," emphasized Stanislav Sahaydak.

EcoPolitic previously reported on which types of pollution Ukrainian businesses paid the highest environmental tax for. At the same time, 65% of resource taxes were provided by only 20 companies, including PJSC "ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih".
