A comprehensive infrastructure for waste management in accordance with European principles is planned to be created in the Poltava region. This involves the construction of waste processing plants, sorting stations, and new landfills for solid household waste.
Olga Petrenko, acting director of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Regional State Administration, reported on the regional plan during a meeting of the regional council's environmental commission.
The document, which sets out the strategy for the development of the waste management system, was developed on the basis of a cluster approach. The Poltava region was divided into six clusters: Poltava, Kremenchuk, Myrhorod, Kobelyaky, Hlobyn, and Lubny.
The region plans to build four waste processing plants, 26 sorting stations, and six regional landfills.
Where will the waste processing plants be built?
Waste processing facilities are planned to be built within the Lubensky and Hlobinsky municipal communities. A decision has already been made to allocate land plots.
A plant will also be built in Kremenchuk. The city council also approved the allocation of land for construction at its session. The issue of changing its functional purpose is currently being resolved.
Within the Tereshkivska rural community, there are plans to create an industrial park with a waste processing plant. For this purpose, 27 hectares are to be allocated next to the Markhalivska landfill. However, there is a problem with the transfer of the land plot.
The territory on which the waste processing plant is planned to be built is state-owned and used by the state-owned enterprise "Forests of Ukraine." Its transfer to communal ownership is only possible by decision of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine. Communication with the government is currently ongoing. The village council proposes to transfer 50 hectares of its territory in another location for forest use in exchange for 27 hectares of state-owned land.
EcoPolitics previously reported that Chernivtsi plans to build a thermal power plant that will run on biofuel from the landfill.
Ukrainian communities are cooperating with the Swedish WM4U program, which helps modernize the waste management system. Pilot measures of the program are already being implemented in the Kharkiv, Poltava, Vinnytsia, and Ivano-Frankivsk regions.
