Gas is generated from waste, making it more environmentally friendly than fossil fuels

Ukrainian agricultural holding Gals Agro was the first in the country to start using its own biomethane in the sugar production process. The "green" product has received special certification, making it competitive in the EU market, where large volumes of more harmful fossil gas continue to be used.

According to the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine, this was announced by the company's CEO Serhiy Kravchuk at the Forbes Agro 2026 conference.

"We supplied biomethane to our sugar factory and today we officially have certified 'green' sugar, which is probably not available in Europe. Against the backdrop of EU climate policy, this sugar will enter the EU market, as sugar factories there continue to consume natural gas instead of biomethane," said the head of the agricultural holding.

Own raw materials – own fuel

The company grows sugar beets and processes them at two plants in the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions. Annually, this involves processing 480,000 tons of harvest.

Back in 2023, Hals Agro started producing its own biomethane at a plant in Chernihiv region, becoming the first industrial biogas producer in Ukraine. By 2025, the company had already begun exporting clean fuel to the European Union.

The company’s biomethane facility has a total capacity of 3 million cubic meters per year. The facility is connected to Ukraine’s general gas distribution network. This year, the agricultural holding plans to launch another facility of the same capacity, this time in Kyiv region.

EcoPolitic previously reported that in 2025, Ukrainian producers exported biomethane to the EU for the first time. In addition to Hals Agro, MHP Holding and the VITAGRO group of companies also sold clean fuel. The total export volume exceeded 11 million cubic meters.
