A year of growth for wind energy in Germany and Ukraine: success despite different scales

Germany installed 1.5 times more wind turbines than in 2024, and Ukraine installed more than in the previous two years

2025 was a record year for wind energy in Germany. According to industry associations BWE and VDMA, 958 new wind turbines with a total capacity of 5.2 GW were commissioned in the country during the year. Ukraine also showed extremely good results, but the scale of new generation is 16 times smaller.

This was reported in the publication EnergoBusiness.

Germany's results

The number of wind turbines installed in Germany last year was 50% higher than in 2024. Thus, 2025 became the second year in the history of the industry in terms of capacity growth.

Most of the new wind turbines were installed in northern Germany, which has become traditional for the industry. At the same time, the weakest dynamics of wind farm construction were recorded in Saarland and Bavaria.

At the same time, despite the rapid growth in the number of generating facilities, the volume of wind power generated in 2025 decreased by 5% compared to the previous year. Industry experts attribute these results to weather conditions: generation was lower due to weak wind activity in the spring, which is considered an abnormal phenomenon.

"Year of wind" for Ukraine

Despite the challenges of full-scale war, 2025 was also marked by a revival in the development of wind energy in Ukraine.

According to data from the Ukrainian Wind Energy Association, equipment capable of generating an additional 324 MW of energy was built in the country during the year. The new capacity in 2025 exceeds the total increase in wind power generation over the previous two years, which amounted to 248 MW. According to experts, this demonstrates significant progress in the industry and its recovery.

EcoPolitic previously reported, citing Eurostat data, that green energy supplied 47.5% of the European Union's energy.
