The industry owes its sharp growth to the US, France, and new potential leaders—India and Brazil

In 2024, 10 billion cubic meters of biomethane were produced worldwide. These figures exceeded the 2023 volumes by 15% and were seven times higher than the 2014 volumes. The analysis confirms the trend towards rapid growth in the production of renewable natural gas.

This is evidenced by a review prepared by the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine based on information from Global LNG Hub and Greg Molnar.

Analysts note that this increase was made possible by strict environmental policies, stricter emission standards, and mechanisms created to support "green" fuels.

The growth was primarily driven by market leaders, including the US and France. In addition, Brazil and India are playing an increasingly important role in the statistics, with significant potential for production growth in the coming years.

The US maintains its leadership

In the United States, biomethane production is growing particularly rapidly. Back in 2019, the country became the largest producer of renewable gas. In just nine months of 2024, the US increased its biomethane production by 20%.

Europe's biomethane leaders

Germany and Denmark have long topped the ranking of European biomethane producers. However, in recent years, France has confidently overtaken other countries, with its gas production increasing by 70% since 2022. With such indicators, it will become the EU leader in biomethane production this year.

Among the countries that are steadily increasing their production of "green" gas are the Czech Republic, Italy, and the Netherlands.

Countries approaching the top

The most optimistic forecast concerns India. In the medium term, it is capable of increasing its compressed biogas production tenfold. This will be facilitated by the country's recently adopted commitments.

Brazil is also among the promising producers. In just two years, biomethane production there could increase more than fourfold. If these forecasts come true, the country will become the sixth largest producer of this gas in the world.

EcoPolitic previously reported that Ukraine is currently holding negotiations to increase biomethane generation. The country is also seeking mechanisms to ensure that, upon implementation, the same rules apply to its biomethane as to that produced in the European Union.
