It is likely that poachers harmed the forest giant. People contacted the police and environmental inspectors, but experts have not yet examined the animal

A red-listed moose with an open chest wound was spotted in the Zhytomyr region. The animal can barely move and needs urgent help, but is still wandering through the woods.

As Ruslan Mrynskyi said in his post, appeals to the authorities haven't led to any concrete steps to save the animal.

Search for help

Elk are very strong animals, even when injured. Attempting to provide medical assistance without professional training can have unpredictable consequences for humans. However, it turned out that calling specialists to the scene was not so easy.

Concerned citizens tried to get support from the State Environmental Inspection. This is an obvious solution, as the issue concerns a real case of environmental protection — the rescue of a rare creature listed in the Red Book. However, appeals to the State Environmental Inspection and the Zhytomyr Patrol Police yielded no results. The only thing that happened was that the National Police recorded the incident.

"Ecology just shrugged its shoulders and did nothing more to help. Neither contacts nor assistance for the animal," writes Ruslan Mrinsky.

People tried to reach out to animal rights activists, but on weekends they were unable to get through. UAnimals got in touch two days after the injured animal was reported and offered their support.

The Animal’s Current Situation

According to the latest information, someone visited the location where the animal was seen but was unable to provide help. An open and convenient space is needed for examination, but the moose is moving through the forest and is now in a hard-to-reach place. According to the man, local foresters are monitoring the animal’s movements.

"We ask the responsible services to pay attention to this situation and take the necessary measures to prevent the death of a rare animal. Please help save the animal!" insists Mr. Ruslan.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, environmentalists have filed a complaint with the Prosecutor General's Office regarding crimes committed by the former Ministry of Ecology. The case concerns the illegal harvesting of berries, mushrooms, and reeds in national parks, which leaves animals without food and damages their habitat.

In the US, endangered species remain defenseless against the economic ambitions of the current administration. The country has changed its legislation on the protection of rare species.
