Lviv has fully completed the first phase of reclamation of the Hrybovychi landfill and moved on to the second.
This was reported by the publication Varianty with reference to the press service of the Lviv City Council.
The first phase is complete
It is reported that it lasted for the last 4 years. It was completed on February 4. The project is being implemented by the Turkish company Goksin Insaat.
Oleksandr Yegorov, head of the Lviv municipal enterprise Green City, said that during this time the entire landfill has been completely reclaimed: it has been covered with a special waterproofing film, and all filtration lakes, of which there were many, have been drained. According to him, now there is only one lake left to filter the residues.
The official said that during the first phase of reclamation, 28 hectares of the landfill were brought into the correct shape and covered with protective layers of mineral soil, drainage geocomposite for uniform gas collection, a membrane that does not allow anything to pass from the outside, and geotextiles that protect against technical damage.

There are also 33 vertical wells and a system for surface gas extraction. The collected biogas is processed into electricity. In this way, 400 kW of electricity is generated every hour.
The second phase has begun
The contractors have now moved on to the second phase of the project. It includes
- installation of a drainage cover over the entire landfill area;
- covering it with a layer of soil;
- planting perennial grasses;
- arrangement of a reservoir for surface water treatment and fire extinguishing;
- installation of new wells and restoration of existing ones for groundwater monitoring.
Mr. Yegorov said that in a few weeks the landfill will be actively filled in and promised that by the end of the year it will be completely finished and covered with green grass.

What is known about the cost of the work
According to the publication, the cost of the first phase of reclamation work is €17.8 million, and the second – €8.4 million.
The first phase was partially funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) through a €6.04 million loan, and future work will be jointly funded by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Lviv city budget.
The publication also reminded that the Hrybovychi landfill has been in operation for almost 60 years. The landfill covers more than 38 hectares and has accumulated approximately 14.3 million tons of waste.
As a reminder, in May 2024, EcoPolitic told how the reclamation of the Hrybovychi landfill was going on. At that time, officials reported that the technical phase was nearing completion, and the next phase would begin in July with the covering of the “dome” with a fertile layer of soil and tree planting.
EcoPolitic provided a detailed analysis of the causes of the tragedy and Lviv's environmental problems related to garbage in its article “5 Years After the Hrybovychi Tragedy: Promises, Garbage Fraud, Courts, and the ‘Journeys’ of Lviv's Garbage”. In May 2022, we reported that the landfill near Lviv was being degassed.
