Glass, plastic, paper – 104 co-owners’ associations of apartment blocks have joined a Vinnytsia municipal project on separate waste collection. In total, the participants in the initiative collected over 90 tonnes of recyclable materials, which were sent for further recycling.
This was reported by Vinnytsia City Council.
A mini-sorting station in every building
All buildings taking part in the project have specially equipped sorting areas. Four types of bins have been installed there – for plastic, glass, paper and mixed waste. The mixed waste is collected by the municipal enterprise ‘EcoVin’. The contents of the other bins, which are essentially raw materials for recycling, are handed over by the housing associations to specialist companies. As a result, residents receive funds for building improvements.
In total, all the housing associations involved in the project have already sorted 20 tonnes of plastic, 26 tonnes of glass and 44 tonnes of paper. These figures cover the period since May last year.
“In this way, on the one hand, the burden on the household waste landfill is reduced, and on the other, people receive funds that they can use for the upkeep of their buildings or the surrounding area. How exactly these funds are used is decided separately by the residents of each building,” said Pavlo Kedyts, head of the section for the day-to-day maintenance of buildings and surrounding areas within the City Council’s Housing Department.
The municipality also noted that such projects teach residents to treat the environment more responsibly. This helps to foster environmental awareness.
The authorities also reminded residents that standard bin sites are intended solely for household waste.
EcoPolitic previously reported that, thanks to this project, the Vinnytsia housing association “Akademika Yangelya-73” was able to resolve a number of issues relating to the landscaping of the courtyard and the building’s communal areas. In particular, using funds from the waste collection scheme, ornamental plants were planted, benches were painted and letterboxes were refurbished.
