To mark the 38th anniversary of the Chornobyl accident, the National Bank of Ukraine is putting into circulation a commemorative coin "Black Stork".
This was reported by the press service of the National Bank on Facebook.
It is noted that this is the fourth coin in a series dedicated to the revival of wildlife in the Chornobyl reserve. The reverse of the coin depicts a black stork with chicks in a nest above it, while the obverse shows a symbolic wheel of life that marks the revival of nature: a stylized international sign "Radiation Threat".
The face value of the commemorative coin is UAH 5, and the mintage is 40 thousand pieces (including 20 thousand pieces in souvenir packaging).
As you know, the black stork is a rare bird that has become one of the unique symbols of the revival of life in the Chernobyl zone. It settles mainly near forest lakes or swamps. Unlike the white stork, this bird is very cautious and tries to avoid people, so it is very rare to see representatives of its species.
"The black stork is included in the Red Book of Ukraine and the European Red List, protected by the Bern and Bonn Conventions. Currently, its population is growing in the territory of the Chernobyl reserve. This indicates the recovery of the region's ecosystem, and the fact that the reserve is becoming a center of biodiversity even in conditions of radiation pollution." , – the press service notes.
