In Poltava, it is planned to implement a project for environmental and energy waste processing, which provides for the burning of 150-200 thousand tons of solid domestic waste per year to produce heat and electricity.
Evgeny Palenka, adviser to the director of the utility company Poltavateploenergo, said this, adding that this would allow the production of 172 GWh of thermal and 56 GWh of electricity, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
It is noted that the waste incineration plant will be able to provide heat to 35,000 families and electricity to 31,000. According to preliminary calculations, the cost of the project will be €100-300 million.
Palenca stressed that the idea for the project had already been in place before the full-scale invasion.
"There is a huge problem of garbage dumps in Poltava, this is actually a disaster for the city. The idea of generating heat and electricity from garbage is very natural. At the same time, we are solving environmental issues, as well as the production of heat, hot water and electricity at tariffs predicted for 20 years ahead,” he said.
According to him, this will also help reduce the community's dependence on natural gas (by 25-39 million m3 per year) and increase its price. In addition, local authorities will have greater financial flexibility. After all, it will be possible to balance tariffs for the collection and disposal of waste with tariffs for thermal energy and hot water.
"Such serious projects need analytics and research into the quality of energy that can be obtained from local waste. As soon as we receive a high-quality project document, we will seek funding," Palenca said.
He explained that it is planned to implement the project at the expense of loans and grants from IFIs, as well as partly from the local budget, if possible.
It is noted that the implementation of the project will take about five years, and the life of the plant will exceed 25 years.
