Complaints about the unbearable smell were received in 2017, 2018 and 2019

The mayor of Lutsk, Ihor Polishchuk, said that the residents of the community will block the work of the Hnidava sugar factory due to the unbearable unpleasant smell from the activity.

Residents of Lutsk and Boratynsk communities complained about the stench, the likely source of which is the activities of the partner company Bio PEK on the territory of the plant, the Lutsk City Council reports.

According to Oleg Geleta, the acting head of the city council's ecology department, the Bio Pek plant washed containers before suspending work. This waste ended up in their sewers and entered the filtration fields.

It is noted that the city council sent letters to the Boratyn community, the State Production and Consumer Service and the State Environmental Service in the Volyn region to respond and take appropriate measures. The agencies must provide an answer by June 9.

Polishchuk emphasized that similar situations occurred in 2017-2018 and in 2019.

"If the plant does not deal with its emissions and unpleasant smells and will interfere with the normal life of the people of our community, the residents of the Boratyn community, then we have absolutely effective and legal methods to block the operation of this plant. And until the issue with unpleasant odors is resolved. We are not going to tolerate this indignity on the part of the Hnidava Sugar Factory," he said.

Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that in the Rivne Region, the Court of Appeal decided to partially stop the activities of Kolor S.I.M. LLC, located in the village of Klevan, until the air pollution is eliminated. The enterprise operated without a special permit for emissions from 30 additional stationary sources that released a number of hazardous chemicals into the air.

As EcoPolitic previously reported, the Lutsk city territorial community joined the "LUN City AIR" network, which will allow citizens to receive information about air quality in real time.
