Analysis of data from available air monitoring points showed that in 2022, 88% of the time, i.e. about 10.5 months, the overall air quality index in Kyiv was low and very low.
High and very high levels of air pollution in the system were recorded in 4% of days, that is, about 2 weeks, Oleksandr Vozniy, head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the KMDA, reports on Facebook.
He explained that the Common Air Quality Index (CAQI) is formed automatically based on indicators of several main pollutants:
- PM2.5 and PM10 (dust particles);
- SO2 (sulfur dioxide);
- NO2 (nitrogen dioxide);
- OZ (surface ozone);
- CO (carbon monoxide).
Vozny emphasized that the lower the CAQI, the better the air quality. P the vast majority of the time the air in Kyiv was clean, because:
- 38% of the time the overall air quality index was very low;
- 50% – low;
- 8% – average;
- 3% – high;
- less than 1% is very high.
He emphasized that a network of seven European-style high-precision (reference) air monitoring points operates in Kyiv. Data from the points are recorded every minute, stored on the server and displayed in real time on website management of ecology.
In addition, there are more than 40 indicative points in Kyiv. They complement high-precision observation stations, analyzing the air for such indicators as dust (PM1.0, PM 2.5 and PM10), sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, ozone, hydrogen sulfide, volatile organic substances. Data from both types of monitoring points are available to application users Kyiv Digital.
Earlier, EcoPolitic wrote, that the Kyiv City Council supported the State Monitoring Program in the field of atmospheric air protection in the city, which will expand the existing monitoring network and promote improving air quality.
