Draft law No. 8150 may lead to mass extermination of homeless dogs and cats

Animal rights activists urged people's deputies not to vote for draft law No. 8150 "On amendments to some laws of Ukraine on improving the requirements of legislation on food products, feed, veterinary medicine, and animal welfare."

Activists of the UAnimals humanist movement on Instagram called this document murderous and anti-humane.

They emphasized that draft law No. 8150, among other things, proposes to remove from the law "On the protection of animals from cruelty treatment" the clause prohibiting the mass reduction of homeless animals for depopulation. This can lead to mass extermination of homeless dogs and cats.

Animal rights activists emphasized that the document will also allow foie gras production to resume in Ukraine. It goose or duck liver that is artificially enlarged by fattening, causing the birds to suffer.

Activists from the public organization Yapomoga also spoke against draft law No. 8150. They noted that according to Article 4 of the Law "On protection of animals", cruel treatment of animals is incompatible with the requirements of morality and humanity, causes moral harm to a person.

"The authors of the draft law did not justify the need to lower the standards of protection of farm animals in comparison with the EU legislation, which is subject to implementation in Ukraine. With draft law No. 8150, Ukraine violates international obligations regarding the Association Agreement with the European Union," noted animal rights activists from the organization Open Cages.

However, People's Deputy Eduard Proschuk reported on his Facebook page that the eco-committee recommended the agrarian committee, which is responsible for the draft law, to finalize it. In particular, it is necessary to remove the norms related to the cruel treatment of animals.

"The changes that are being proposed now are absurd. There is a 2020 law on the protection of animals. It prescribes basic humane principles regarding them that exist in all civilized countries," he emphasized.

Earlier, EcoPoltic wrote, that the Committee of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Environmental Policy and Nature Management has submit your proposals to draft law No. 8150 "On making changes to some laws of Ukraine on improving the requirements of the legislation on food products, feed, veterinary medicine and animal welfare".

As EcoPolitic previously reported, in Obukhov, Kyiv region, animal rights activists called the police to protect the animals from the notorious doghunter Oleksiy Svyatohora from Kyiv. He promised to destroy homeless dogs in the discussion of the Facebook community "Overheard Obukhiv".
