The island is home to over 120 Red Book species of plants and animals.

The Supreme Court of Ukraine decided to leave unchanged the decision of the Kyiv Court of Appeal on the return to the community of Kyiv of 17 protected areas on Zhukovsky Island.

At the end of the 2000s, 3 hectares of the island, worth more than 45 million hryvnias, were donated for development, reports the head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Kyiv City State Administration Olexander Vozny on Facebook.

"Court cases for the return of these lands to the community of Kyiv began 5 years ago, and now the case has finally come to an end," he wrote.

Vozny added that in May 2021, the Kyiv Court of Appeal decided to take 17 sites of the natural reserve fund on the island from the developer who illegally appropriated them and transfer them to the city.

He also noted that Zhukov Island is a unique corner of nature in the Goloseevsky district of Kyiv. It is located between Vodnikov Island and Lake Konik. The island is a nature reserve with an area of more than 1630 hectares and is home to more than 120 species of plants and animals listed in the Red Data Book.

“It’s great that justice has won in this case, and the protected areas of the island have returned to the possession of the bulk of the city!” Vozny said.
