Last year, 30 wind turbine manufacturers (WPPs) installed 29,234 turbines worldwide with a total capacity of 104.7 GW.
This is stated in the report of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), published on May 19.
Of the 30 current manufacturers, 18 are located in the Asia-Pacific region, 9 in Europe. The top 15 manufacturers account for over 98% of all installations. These manufacturers represent five countries - Denmark, China, USA, Germany, Spain (according to the location of the main enterprises; production can be located in other countries). At the same time, 10 of the 15 largest wind turbine suppliers in 2021 are Chinese firms.
Vestas enjoyed a record year to remain the number one turbine supplier, making 17.7% of the new installations. Chinese company Goldwind followed in second with 11.8%, holding its position from 2020, while Siemens Gamesa also had a record year with a 9.7% global market share, moving it up two positions to third place in 2021. Another Chinese company, Envision, is fourth with 8.65% of 2021’s market. GE Renewable Energy rounds out the top five with 8.55% of the market.
Vestas and Siemens Gamesa both enjoyed record years, with both companies leading the way in geographic diversification, with 37 and 32 countries delivered to, respectively. GE supplied 22 markets in 2021, while Goldwind and Envision only reached seven and three markets, respectively.
Despite a successful year in terms of deliveries, the financial performance of wind turbine manufacturers has deteriorated due to "an ultra-competitive pricing environment, higher external costs and continued bottlenecks hindering the faster development of wind energy."
Note that the figures in the GWEC report are somewhat different from the data in the BloombergNEF report published earlier.
