Around 80% of all new installations are small-scale solar power stations set up for self-consumption

According to preliminary figures, around 1.1 GW of solar generation capacity was installed in Ukraine in the first half of 2026 alone. Small solar power stations continue to dominate the mix of new solar power stations.

This was reported by the Ukrainian Solar Energy Association.

Taking the new generation into account, Ukraine currently has around 9.4–9.7 GW of solar power capacity. However, large-scale industrial solar power stations have long since given way to smaller ones – these typically have a capacity of up to 1 MW and are installed mainly for self-consumption. Such installations accounted for 80 per cent of the total.

A boom in the energy storage market

Alongside power generation, the energy storage sector is also developing, enabling the system to be balanced during the hours of darkness.

Experts predict that the volume of renewable energy installations in 2026 will break the records set in 2025. Last year, RES installations totalled around 2.9 GWh*, whilst in the first half of 2026 they already amounted to around 1.6–1.9 GWh*. Overall, by the end of the year, new RES capacity is expected to reach approximately 3.2 GWh.

Forecasts and conditions for deployment

In his comments to PV-Magazine, Vladislav Sokolovsky, chairman of the ASEU, noted that it is currently difficult to forecast the development of solar energy by 2027 due to the uncertainty.

The sector’s prospects may improve as a result of the following factors:

  • accessible financing and insurance against war risks;
  • the restoration and protection of energy infrastructure;
  • support for distributed generation;
  • simplifying connection to networks;
  • deeper integration with the EU energy market.

"Ukraine’s private sector is already investing in new energy capacity, despite the war. The next task is to create the conditions under which these investments can be scaled up," emphasised Vladislav Sokolovsky.

EcoPolitic previously reported that in 2025, ‘green’ energy accounted for 11 per cent of total electricity generation. In total, over the past year, Ukraine added 1.5 GW of solar generation and 324 MW of wind generation.

At the same time, in the EU, this percentage is significantly higher – 54 per cent for the second quarter of 2026.
