Currently monitoring is carried out by various entities

The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine approved the Strategy for an integrated automated radiation monitoring system for the period up to 2024.

This was reported press office Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine.

"In the conditions of war and constant radiation threats from Russia, there is an urgent need to combine radiation monitoring data by creating a single system at the state level and integrating it into the EURDEP European radiation monitoring system. Currently, this is a very important security issue for both Ukraine and Europe," said Ruslan Strilets, head of the Ministry of Natural Resources.

According to the minister, the unified monitoring system will make it possible to detect and quickly respond to threats of the transfer of radioactive substances to Ukraine and beyond its borders in real time.

Today among main problems of radiation monitoring in Ukraine :

  • monitoring is carried out by different entities: Energoatom, GAZV, the State Space Agency, the National Academy of Sciences and the Ukrhydrometeorological center under the State Emergency Service. Their systems provide only sectoral observations of the environmental radiation situation;
  • there are no opportunities to identify, analyze and predict the consequences of radiation accidents that spread beyond the limits of nuclear power plant zones;
  • lack of a unified methodology for summarizing the results of observations;
  • the absence of a single center for collecting observational data and making decisions.

Among expected results of the strategy :

  • creation of a unified built-in radiation monitoring system;
  • synchronization of the Ukrainian radiation monitoring system with the European EURDEP;
  • access to monitoring results in real time;
  • introduction of mechanisms for early warning of the population and forecasting of the development of the radiation situation in Ukraine in case of transboundary transfer of radioactive substances;
  • making effective operational decisions on radiation protection measures in the event of a radiation threat.

The document was developed in pursuance of the decision of the National Security and Defense Council "On Challenges and Threats to the National Security of Ukraine in the Environmental Sphere and Priority Measures for Their Neutralization", put into effect by the Decree of the President of Ukraine dated March 23, 2021 No. 111.

Before EcoPolitica reported that at one of the sites in the Red Forest in the Chernobyl zone, where the Russian military dug trenches, Energoatom specialists recorded abnormally high radiation levels.
